Absolutism in England didn't work because initially it had feudal roots with the barons protecting their rights jealously, as in the Magna Carta. Later in the Civil War, Parliament, the tool used by the kings to raise taxes, had come to represent the common people as well as the lords and gave a focus for resistance against absolute rule and the protection of a much wider section of society
